Accounting Associate (Martinsburg, WV)

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Based in: Martinsburg, West Virginia

Role Summary

The Accounting Associate will be based in Martinsburg, WV, and will be required to travel once a week to the Council’s Washington, DC headquarters. The successful candidate will develop and implement effective accounting procedures in support of the Council’s compliance protocols. The position is full time, and the Council offers an attractive benefits package. Travel expenses to and from the Washington, DC office will be supported by the Council. The Associate must be highly organized, possess extreme attention to detail and be able to handle multiple tasks at the same time. S/he must also be able to handle confidential material in a professional and responsible manner.

Responsibilities: 

  • Reconcile Bank Statements

  • Add financial information to journals and ledgers

  • Utilize a number of sources to create statements and reports

  • Help with G/L account reconciliation and month-end closing, and other general accounting projects

  • Aid staff in accounting questions that require knowledge in determining proper classification of expenditure codes and accounting codes

  • Assist accounts payable with vendor invoices and disbursement filing and with A/P invoice matching & filing

  • Support Accounts Receivable: process daily invoices/credit, apply cash receipt, and help with collection of past due balance

  • Reconcile discrepancies by checking all possible sources of disagreement, reconstructing probable actions, and recognizing the effect on other accounts; prepare correction documents as required

  • Aid in preparation of the annual budget

  • Maintain financial security by following internal controls

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding both member and staff information.

  • Maintain historical records by filing documents

  • Contribute to team efforts

  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 1-4 years of professional work experience in an accounting/bookkeeping role

  • AA or BS/BA in Accounting

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S.-based position is the ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis (U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, or Qualifying Asylee/Refugee)

  • Must be extremely organized and detail-oriented

  • Must have the ability to enter data into various electronic systems while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the data • Spreadsheet and Sage 50 experience preferred

  • Must be able to handle multiple demands at the same time and work ahead of deadlines and anticipate problems and challenges • Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment

  • Must be able to work independently and meet deadlines

  • Must be able to handle confidential information professionally and discreetly

  • Must be highly proficient in Windows Office software including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • A knowledge of the countries of Southeast Asia a plus
