On June 26, the US-ASEAN Business Council held its first ASEAN-US Digital Policy Consultative Forum (“the Forum”) in Grand Hyatt, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at the side line of the ASEAN Telecommunication Senior Officials Meeting and ASEAN Telecommunication Regulators’ Council Joint Working Group (TELSOM-ATRC JWG) meeting. Around 60 representatives from TELSOM-ATRC JWG, US-ABC member companies, and other regional stakeholders attended the Forum. This forum is generously supported by Qualcomm, Oracle, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Facebook, IBM, and Cisco.
The Forum is a platform for policy makers and stakeholders to exchange views on how to establish friendly ICT policies that will allow technological innovations to give greater benefits for ASEAN economic growth. Amb. Michael W. Michalak, Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director, US-ASEAN Business Council and Ms. Nur Sulyna Abdullah, Chief Officer, Corporate Strategy Sector, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on behalf of TELSOM chair delivered welcome remarks in the Forum.
The Forum discussed the latest trends on innovation tools and regional policy surrounding these innovative tools in the region, including issues related to cybersecurity, connectivity, cross border data flow, artificial intelligence, personal data protection, etc. Speakers in the two panel discussions came from AWS, Facebook, IBM, Cisco, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and Malaysian Digital Economy Commission (MDEC). The 2nd Forum is planned to be held at the sideline of ASEAN TELSOM Leaders’ meeting in Singapore, the week of August 13. Broad topic of the 2nd Forum will be on data and innovation.
