Malaysia's exports in July contracted 5.3% to RM59.85 billion while imports were down 4.8% to RM57.94 billion, giving rise to a trade surplus of RM1.91 billion for the month. "Overall, trade was lower by 5.1% to RM117.79 billion," the International Trade and Industry Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. Exports of manufactured goods declined 3.9% to RM48.75 billion, with electrical and electronics (E&E) products contracting by RM1.39 billion.

CIMB Group Holdings, despite a 36% on-year surge in second quarter net profit, Monday warned it may miss two of its annual financial targets as economic growth in its key Southeast Asian markets decelerates. The second-largest Malaysian bank by assets, has cut this year's loan growth forecast to between 6% and 7% from 10% while return-on-equity is now expected to come in at "around 9%" this year, a tad shy of the original 10% target, said CIMB Group's Chief Executive Zafrul Aziz. Return-on-equity was 8.1% while total loans expanded 6.6% at the end of June. "While we expect a better performance in the second half, our loan growth and ROE expectations will likely be below our original 2016 target," Zafrul told reporters at an earnings briefing. "However, all other targets like capital, cost and dividend payout remain on track." CIMB Group is aiming to raise the so-called common equity Tier 1 capital, a key measure of a bank's financial strength, to 11% this year from 10.3% as on 2015-end, while cutting its cost-to-income ratio to below 53% from 55.6% last year. The lender also plans to pay 40% of its profits as dividends this year.

This was a key agenda item at the 6th Annual Meeting of the ASEAN Audit Regulators Group (AARG) which was held in Singapore on 26 Aug 2016. Hosted by ACRA, the meeting was attended by over 100 participants. This included regulators from eight ASEAN countries, Hong Kong and China, as well as the regional and global leadership of the Global Public Policy Committee (GPPC) audit firms1. The AARG members comprise Singapore’s ACRA, Malaysia’s Audit Oversight Board (AOB), Indonesia’s Finance Professions Supervisory Center (PPPK) and Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Malaysia has reported its first case of a pregnant woman with Zika, who lives in a state bordering Singapore where authorities have already recorded 275 cases. The 27-year-old woman in the southern state of Johor is the third person with Zika in Malaysia, where fears of a full-blown outbreak emanating from Singapore are mounting. Infected pregnant women can give birth to babies with microcephaly, a deformation marked by abnormally small brains and heads.

Malaysia is looking at the likelihood of recording more than 60,000 dengue cases this year. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the health authorities made the alarming projection yesterday based on last year's trend of dengue cases which saw a 98 per cent increase or 43,346 cases compared to 21,900 in 2012. "We cannot take the matter lightly. This is obviously a dangerous situation," he said after chairing the National Local Government Council meeting here yesterday. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has finally announced the fee details of the long-awaited spectrum assignment for telecommunications companies. In a bourse filing today, DiGi.Com Bhd said its unit Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd has received a letter of offer dated Aug 30, 2016 from the MCMC, in respect of the allocation of 2x5MHz of 900MHz and 2x20MHz of 1800MHz bands, effective July 1, 2017. "The acceptance deadline for this letter of offer is Nov 1, 2016," it said. According to DiGi.Com, the spectrum fee consists of two components, namely the price component totalling RM598.55 million, and an annual fee component of RM51.48 million. Meanwhile, Axiata Bhd said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Celcom Axiata Bhd, has received the letter of offer from MCMC for the allocation of 2x10MHz of the 900MHz bands, and 2x20MHz of the 1800MHz bands, effective July 1, 2017. Similarly, Axiata’s spectrum fee comprises two components: the price of the spectrum which is RM816.75 million, and the annual fee component of RM70.25 million.
