Mr. Evan G. Greenberg to Assume Chairmanship of US-ASEAN Business Council and Chairman's Policy Committee Formed

(Washington, DC) The US-ASEAN Business Council is pleased to welcome Evan G. Greenberg, Chairman and CEO of ACE Limited, as the Chairman of the Council's Board of Directors starting January 1, 2013. Mr. Greenberg succeeds George Kirkland, Executive Vice President, Upstream and Gas, and Vice Chairman of the Board for the Chevron Corporation.   Mr. Greenberg will serve a two-year term as Chairman.

"We are very fortunate to have Mr. Greenberg assume the Chairmanship of the Council in 2013. He leads a company that is very active and successful in ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations)," said Council President Alexander Feldman. "Mr. Greenberg has decades of experience in Southeast Asia and is focused on further developing the economic relationship between the United States and ASEAN. This is a crucial time for the U.S. business relationship with ASEAN. The U.S. Government has substantially expanded its relationship with ASEAN over the last four years: by acceding to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation; appointing the first resident Ambassador to ASEAN based in Jakarta; arranging events like the US-ASEAN Business Forum, and formalizing the U.S.-ASEAN leaders meeting and U.S. participation in the East Asia Summit as annual events. We look forward to Mr. Greenberg's leadership in expanding the work that the Council is doing to support U.S. ties with ASEAN and continuing to be partners in ASEAN's important economic initiatives, such as the ASEAN Economic Community and the ASEAN Single Window."

"I am pleased to assume the role as Chair of the Council Board," said Greenberg.  "ASEAN is an important and dynamic part of the world.  I look forward to working with the Council members toward our goal of supporting ASEAN economic development with greater US business presence, trade and investment."

The Council will also establish a Chairman's Policy Committee. The Committee will assist the Chairman in the development of the Council's priorities and positions in advocating for increased two-way trade and investment. The Committee is composed of individuals who collectively have over a century of experience in the region including three individuals (Ambassadors Bosworth, Negroponte and Roy) who have served as U.S. Ambassadors to countries in ASEAN. The Committee will also help lead a strategy to communicate and raise the Council profile in both Washington and ASEAN capitals.

In addition to Mr. Greenberg, the Chairman's Policy Council will include:

  • Ambassador Karan K. Bhatia, Vice President and Senior Counsel for Global Government Affairs and Policy, General Electric Company
  • Ambassador Stephen W. Bosworth, Dean of the Fletcher School at Tufts University
  • Mr. Roderick M. Hills, Partner, Hills Stern and Morley LLP
  • Mr. J. William Ichord, Vice President, International Government Affairs, ConocoPhillips
  • Mr. Glenn G. Jordan, President, Pacific Group, The Coca-Cola Company
  • Ambassador John D. Negroponte, Vice Chairman, McLarty Associates
  • Ambassador J. Stapleton Roy, Director, Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

"We see great prospects in ASEAN, and the Chairman's Policy Committee will help ensure that we are fully taking advantage of the opportunities before us," said Feldman.  "We look forward to Mr. Greenberg's Chairmanship and are excited about the years ahead."
