(Washington D.C.) The staff and members of the US-ASEAN Business Council would like to convey their condolences to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the Singapore Government, and all Singaporeans on the passing of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

As Singapore’s first Prime Minister from 1965 to 1990, Lee was instrumental in the founding and evolution of ASEAN. He oversaw Singapore’s transformation from a Third World country to the thriving business hub it is today, devoting 52 years of his life to public service. Minister Mentor Lee will be remembered with respect as the architect of a dynamic, modern Singapore which plays an essential role on the global stage.

At the Council’s 25th Anniversary Gala in 2009, we had the great honor of presenting Minister Mentor Lee with a Lifetime Achievement Award.  During his speech, Minister Mentor Lee highlighted the economic importance of the Asia-Pacific and ASEAN to the United States. The Council remains committed to fulfilling Minister Mentor Lee’s vision.

“I am saddened by the news of Minister Mentor Lee’s passing and offer my deepest condolences to the people of Singapore,” said Evan Greenberg, Chairman of the Council’s Board of Directors and Chairman and CEO of ACE Group.  “Minister Mentor Lee was a giant of a figure.  Through his leadership, he transformed Singapore into the modern and prosperous country it is today.  His geopolitical insights were always so clear-eyed, perceptive and instructive to us all.  He will be missed.”

“I was honored to present Minister Mentor Lee with the Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009,” said Alexander Feldman, President and CEO of the Council. “His support of the Council and U.S. business was instrumental in strengthening the bond between Singapore and the United States.
