U.S. Companies Engage Government of Vietnam to Discuss Trade and Investment

(Hanoi) The US-ASEAN Business Council concluded a four day Senior Executives Business Mission to Vietnam today with a meeting with Prime Minister H.E. Nguyen Xuan Phuc. The delegation of 30 leading U.S. companies across a wide variety of sectors was led by US-ASEAN Business Council Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director Ambassador Michael Michalak, Vice President for Government Affairs & Policy for ASEAN, Australia, New Zealand, & PNG for GE Christian Bennett, and Council Vice President for Policy Marc Mealy.

“Following President Donald Trump’s announcement to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in January, the Vietnamese government responded by reaffirming its intentions to continue domestic economic reforms to make Vietnam an attractive destination for foreign investment,” said Ambassador Michael Michalak. “The timing of the mission is perfect for Vietnam. As the Government of Vietnam plans and prepares for APEC, it is leveraging this opportunity to showcase Vietnam and what the country has to offer.”

"A common theme in our discussions with both the Vietnamese government and the local business community was deepening the complimentary nature of our bilateral economic relations to promote mutually beneficial job creation and growth in both countries," said Marc Mealy.  "We thanked the government of Vietnam for its continued interest in receiving recommendations from the U.S. business community to expand U.S. exports of goods and services in ways which would also support their economic priorities in the areas of infrastructure development, smart cities, sustainable agriculture and promoting entrepreneurs, startups and SMEs."

The mission this year focuses on a few specific themes:
 

  • Identifying bilateral business opportunities between the U.S. and Vietnam;
  • Continuing to build the relationship and dialogue between U.S. business and the Government of Vietnam, in order to have an ongoing two-way channel on economic policy priorities and opportunities;
  • The Council intends to build on that dialogue to:
    • Address key business challenges in Vietnam
    • Identify ways to further deepen the stakeholder consultation process here in Vietnam
    • Support the GOV’s plans to maintain its economic restructuring efforts, privatization of SOEs, and integrate Vietnam’s economy globally.
    • Discuss how we as an American business community can support Vietnam’s implementation of FTA’s and other reforms
    • and exchange views on economic trends and other issues we see coming up in 2017
  • Offer U.S. business support for Vietnam’s 2017 APEC Host Year
Companies participating in the mission include 3M, ADM, AES, Amway, Apple, Bay Global Strategies, Cargill, Coca-Cola, Dow, ExxonMobil, Ford, General Electric, General Motors, Google, Herbalife, HP, Elanco, MasterCard, Mead Johnson Nutrition, MSD, Metlife, Microsoft, Monsanto, Philip Morris, Procter & Gamble, Qualcomm, Time Warner, Uber, Visa and Zoetis.
