(YANGON, MYANMAR) - The US Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Council for Myanmar announced the appointment of Gretchen Kunze last week as its new Executive Director. An international development specialist, Kunze has held regional and country director positions for over 12 years, including working in Myanmar as the Country Director of Cardno Emerging Markets and Country Representative of World Learning.
“We are thrilled to have someone of Gretchen’s caliber in the Executive Director role,” said Alexander Feldman, member of the organization’s Board of Directors and Chairman, President & CEO of the US-ASEAN Business Council, the parent organization of the US ICT Council for Myanmar. “Her leadership and business expertise in Myanmar and the Asia-Pacific region will go far in advancing the US ICT Council’s mission to support the development of Myanmar’s digital economy.”
Kunze has 20 years of professional experience in international development with focus areas including democracy building and governance, civil society, and women's empowerment. During her 16 years working in Asia, Kunze has demonstrated leadership in designing impactful programs and strengthening relations with senior government entities. She is also skilled in political economic analysis and operational, financial and administrative management.
“Myanmar is committed to becoming a robust digital economy and has taken several steps in the right direction, such as migrating to Unicode last year,” said Kunze. “Our Council is excited to contribute US technology and expertise—such as providing digital training workshops—to help support the digital development efforts of the Myanmar government, private sector, and civil society organizations.”
Kunze succeeds Margaret “Max” Shu Teasdale, who was appointed Executive Director in 2018 shortly after the US ICT Council became an affiliate of the US-ASEAN Business Council. During her tenure, Shu Teasdale established MOU agreements with the Ministry of Transport & Communications’ Information Technology and Cyber Security Department and the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Industry and Commerce and launched the Myanmar Cybersecurity Month public awareness campaign with strategic partners Myanmar Computer Federation and Myanmar Information Security Professionals.
