The 2023 national budget is expected to be tabled on February 24, 2023. A record RM372 billion (US$79.18 billion) budget had previously been tabled in October 2022 but was not passed before Parliament was dissolved to make way for the 15th General Election. On December 20, the Parliament passed a RM107.7 billion (US$25.36 billion) temporary supplementary supply bill to prevent a government shutdown until the passage of Budget 2023. The supply bill enables Malaysia to maintain government expenditures for the next six months by tapping into government reserves. According to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, many proposals in the original budget will remain intact. There will also be a greater focus on small and medium enterprises and high-impact projects, including those addressing food security, renewable energy, green technology, and upskilling the workforce. The Ministry of Finance launched a portal for Budget 2023 proposals to improve transparency and inclusivity of the budget preparation process. The submission deadline for suggestions by the public is January 31.
