Malaysia Expands Broadband, Internet Access
On February 2, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the Broadband Unity Package to help bridge Malaysia’s digital divide. The package’s scope has been expanded to cover the Middle 40% income group (M40) in addition to the Bottom 40% income group (B40), veterans, people with disabilities, and senior citizens, which were listed as recipients during the initial announcement. The package will start being offered in March as a 24-month subscription contract, which will include unlimited data quota and broadband speed as high as 30 Mbps. Broadband providers supporting the package include Telekom Malaysia (TM), CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, YTL, Time, and Astro. Under the package, the monthly rate for broadband will be RM69 (US$15). A comparable level of internet service would normally cost approximately RM89 (US$20), enabling recipients to save RM480 (US$108) throughout the contract period. The Mobile Internet Prepaid Unity Data Plan, which provides prepaid mobile internet for RM5 (US$1) per month, will become available in February. Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil emphasized the packages’ alignment with the Malaysia Madani concept and encouraged telecommunications companies to offer services at lower rates as appropriate to improve broadband and internet accessibility.
