Timor-Leste is making efforts to convert its ASEAN accession into concrete dividends, treating its membership as a platform to deepen ties with other member states. Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão paid an official visit to Vietnam from June 8-10, where he met Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and the National Assembly Chairman to review cooperation and Dili's ASEAN integration.
During the visit, the two sides signed four agreements covering visa exemption for ordinary passport holders, education, higher education exchanges, and a TATOLI (Timor-Leste News Agency) – Vietnam News Agency partnership. On trade architecture, the two governments signaled intent to accelerate ratification and implementation of their existing bilateral trade agreement and to expedite investment protection negotiations, frameworks that would directly lower commercial and legal risk for firms operating across both markets.
The Government of Timor-Leste hosted the 15th ASCC Strategic Plan Working Group in Dili on June 9–10, its first ASEAN-convened meeting since accession, positioning the capital as a working venue for regional governance that help shape, not merely observe, the bloc's community-building agenda toward 2045. That same diplomatic momentum carried into broader ASEAN corridors: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on June 16 indicated expanding multi-sector cooperation with Timor-Leste, reinforcing that the newest member's bilateral outreach is gaining traction across the region.
