Timor-Leste Makes its Landmark Bid for Sustainable Tourism
Timor-Leste used its debut at the 45th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2026, held from January 28–30, 2026, in Cebu, Philippines, to present a sustainable and high-value tourism strategy that leverages its pristine landscapes, vibrant culture, rich biodiversity, and recent accession as ASEAN’s 11th member state. The national goal is to attract eco-tourism and community-focused visitors rather than mass volumes, aligning with the broader ASEAN Tourism Sectoral Plan 2026–2030 and the region’s shift toward sustainable, resilient, and inclusive tourism development across Southeast Asia.
Timor‑Leste is setting an ambitious target to welcome 200,000 international visitors annually by 2030, positioning itself as Southeast Asia’s “last frontier” for authentic, sustainable adventure travel rather than competing with larger markets. To support this growth, the government is modernizing infrastructure, including a major upgrade of Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport, expansion of hotel capacity, redevelopment of the Dili waterfront, and construction of a conference center to meet ASEAN MICE venue standards. The government is also launching training programs and enhancing professional standards to align with regional tourism frameworks.
On the sidelines of the 45th ASEAN Tourism Forum in Cebu, Timor‑Leste was formally showcased as ASEAN’s newest member to international travel sellers and tourism buyers during ATF’s Travex marketplace, where more than 700 agencies completed over 9,500 business meetings aimed at boosting regional leisure tourism. Timor‑Leste emphasized its undiscovered natural beauty and authentic cultural offerings as a compelling draw for global investment in the travel and tourism space, not the least of which from industry authorities and standard-setters based in the United States.
