During the 47th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN released the Declaration on the Establishment of an ASEAN AI Safety Network (ASEAN AI Safe) on October 26. The Network aims to introduce an institutional mechanism to promote best practices, interdisciplinary collaboration, multistakeholder partnerships, capacity building and research, and collaboration with external partners, including ASEAN Dialogue Partners and industry.

ASEAN AI Safe is a key Priority Economy Deliverables (PEDs) introduced by Malaysia for its 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship year. At the 2026 ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN) on January 15-16, Malaysia will present a formal proposal for endorsement, outlining more detailed institutional and operational arrangements of the Network. Following final endorsement by ADGMIN, the headquarters will be established in Malaysia early 2026 with a dedicated Secretariat to oversee operations and supported by a Governing Council of ASEAN senior officials to provide strategic direction. With AI continuing as a key priority for the 2026 Philippines ASEAN Chairship, more government-led collaborations and initiatives can be expected next year.
