Cambodian Banking Sector Convenes Cybersecurity Workshop

On May 23, Cambodia’s financial community convened for Cybersecurity Day 2025, hosted by the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) under the theme “Prevent and Protect.” Held at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel, the full-day event brought together over 300 participants from financial institutions, government bodies, and the private sector to address rising cyber threats. ABC Chairman Rath Sophoan opened the forum by emphasizing that cybersecurity is now a boardroom priority, not just a technical concern. Speakers underscored the growing prevalence of phishing, ransomware, and fraud, particularly in Cambodia’s rapidly digitizing economy, and called for stronger governance, cross-sector coordination, and investment in secure digital infrastructure. The rise in cybercrime—both in scale and sophistication—has made it one of the most urgent challenges for the country’s financial sector.
Senior representatives from the National Bank of Cambodia, Ministry of Interior’s Anti-Cyber Crime Department, Mastercard, and Cambodia Financial Intelligence Unit (CAFIU) contributed to panel discussions on fraud prevention, digital banking security, and cybersecurity policy frameworks. Deputy Director General Long Vibunrith of NBC reaffirmed that cybersecurity is essential to maintaining financial stability and public trust. Breakout sessions focused on emerging defense technologies, legal protections, and awareness-building, reinforcing a collective commitment to protect Cambodia’s digital economy. The event highlighted the need for robust public-private collaboration and capacity-building to ensure that as digital adoption accelerates, consumer protection and institutional resilience remain at the forefront.
