On February 24, the Government of Laos convened its monthly cabinet meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, with Deputy Prime Ministers, ministry officials, and cabinet members in attendance. The agenda for the meeting focused on the government’s directives to build an independent and self-reliant economy, as part of the broader national development vision.

Officials reviewed and discussed three key planning frameworks: the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2026–2030), the 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Strategy (2026–2035), and the long-term national development vision toward 2055. These frameworks are intended to guide the country’s development trajectory by strengthening national resilience, ensuring sustainable development, and delivering lasting benefits to its citizens.

In addition to strategic planning, the meeting addressed land subsidence concerns in Thongmang village, Xaythany district, Vientiane, as well as tourism promotion strategies following the 2025 visitor trends, and new policies on electric vehicles. Draft decrees on the land and rail transport of dangerous goods and regulations for International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs) were also considered.

Prime Minister Sonexay acknowledged the increasingly complex regional and international environment, citing ongoing military conflicts, trade disputes, and border tensions as external pressures affecting global economic stability. He called on government officials to adopt practical and evidence-based measures to safeguard citizens’ livelihoods from these headwinds while advancing national development objectives. He also stressed the importance of active participation from all cabinet members in crafting effective, achievable strategies.
