On September 22, 2025, the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) announced the planned issuance of the New Family Banknotes Series for five Brunei Dollar denominations, scheduled to be circulated in early 2026. These denominations consist of BND1, BND5, BND100, and BND 500.

These new notes standardize the use of “Brunei Dollars” instead of the nation’s use of the term “Ringgit” interchangeably. The notes feature upgraded, integrated security features, aligned with global developments in the currency industry. Unique printed seals prevent counterfeiting, upholding the strength of the BND as Brunei advances towards a stronger physical and digital economy. Additionally, BDCB is introducing a new DOMINO (brail) feature in the new banknote series to assist the visually impaired. The introduction of new bank notes aligns with Brunei Currency Order 2004, which officially designates “Brunei Dollar” as the national currency name.

This initiative reflects Brunei’s commitment to ensuring secure, inclusive, and convenient payment methods across the Sultanate. Brunei’s enhancements to national currency and related focus on digital commerce readiness provide more assurances for U.S. companies in avoiding counterfeit issues and in promoting more modern payment systems and even mobile wallet solutions.
