U.S. Imposes Full Travel Ban on Myanmar Nationals, with Limited Exemptions

On June 5, United States President Donald Trump signed a proclamation reinstating and expanding the U.S. travel ban, which now includes Myanmar among 12 countries facing full entry restrictions. Effective June 9, the ban suspends both immigrant and non-immigrant visas for Myanmar nationals, citing national security concerns such as high visa overstay rates and inadequate identity verification systems.
This policy marks a revival of the travel restrictions from President Trump's first term, previously upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. While exemptions exist for lawful permanent residents, current visa holders, and certain categories like diplomats and athletes, the ban is expected to significantly impact Myanmar nationals seeking to enter the U.S. for family reunification, education, or employment.
