(Washington, D.C.) - The 10 Southeast Asian nations that make up ASEAN represent the third largest population bordering the first and second largest populations and is the biggest trade and investment regional hub in Asia. With a combined population of over 600 million people, a total GDP nearing US$3 trillion, and an average annual GDP growth rate of 5 percent, ASEAN is also a leading industrial manufacturing node in the global economy. ASEAN is currently the fifth largest regional manufacturing economy in the world. In its 2016 Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index, Deloitte already considers three ASEAN nations – Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand – globally competitive in advanced manufacturing, and it expects Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand to join them among the 15 most competitive manufacturing nations in the world by 2020.
(Ubud) - Strategies for realizing opportunities that emerging technologies bring, the challenges they present, and how governments should be preparing for these technologies were the key themes in meetings between the US-ASEAN Business Council (US-ABC) delegation and ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers over the past three days. The meetings took place in Ubud, Indonesia from December 4-6 as part of the annual ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting (TELMIN).

Throughout the many decades he devoted to public service, President Bush employed great wisdom, tactful leadership, statecraft and diplomacy to ensure America’s role as a leader on the global stage. Through it all, he was a steadfast friend to ASEAN and realized early on the tremendous potential the region holds.
(Hai Phong) - On November 21, more than 200 multi-industry Small and Medium-sized Business (SMBs) owners and executives from Hai Phong and neighboring cities participated in a one-day SMB workshop titled “Elevating SMBs into Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Inclusive Global Value Chains”.
The workshop is a joint initiative between the US-ASEAN Business Council, the Hai Phong People’s Committee, and the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI). It was officially opened by the U.S. Ambassador to Viet Nam, The Honorable Daniel Kritenbrink; the Vice Chairman of Hai Phong People’s Committee, Mr. Le Khac Nam; the Deputy Director General of General Department of Viet Nam Customs, Mr. Mai Xuan Thanh; and the US-ABC Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director, Ambassador Michael W. Michalak.
(Singapore) – On October 30-31, a delegation of six major U.S. energy companies participated in the US-ASEAN Business Council’s business mission to the 36th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) and Associated Meetings in Singapore. It was the eighth business mission that the Council has led to AMEM, which brings together delegations from the Energy Ministries of all ten ASEAN countries, as well as the countries that participate in the AMEM+3 and the East Asia Summit Energy Ministers Meeting (EAS EMM). Enhancing resiliency and connectivity in the energy sector were major themes of this year’s AMEM. The Council’s business mission echoed these themes. The delegation discussed with ASEAN energy officials how the build-out of energy infrastructure, especially infrastructure related to liquified natural gas (LNG) and renewable energy sources, could increase energy security and connectivity.
The US-ASEAN Business Council concluded its annual business mission to Malaysia today with 28 leading U.S. companies. The three-day mission was the first to engage the new government since the Pakatan Harapan’s historic election win in May. During the mission, the delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Malaysia’s dynamic growth and discussed the importance of continuing to create a business environment that encourages trade and investment.
The workshop served as an implementation activity following the US-ASEAN Business Council’s (US-ABC) Business Mission to the Twenty-First Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers (21st M-ATM) in Chiang Mai last January, and was conducted in close collaboration with the Thailand Office of SMEs Promotion (OSMEP), Tourism Council of Thailand, and Thammasat University. It also marked the first capacity building workshop of US-ABC’s newly established Travel and Tourism Committee in support of the travel and tourism ecosystem in ASEAN.
(Washington, DC) The US-ASEAN Business Council offers its sincere condolences to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Vietnamese Government, and the people of Vietnam on the passing of President Tran Dai Quang. President Quang was 61 years old, and had served Vietnam as its President since 2016. During his tenure, President Quang helped to grow the Vietnamese economy at a remarkable pace, all while strengthening trade and political ties with regional and global powers.
(Singapore) – The US-ASEAN Business Council concluded its business mission to the 50th ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Meeting today, where from August 30-September 1, 17 U.S. companies engaged key economic officials on regional and bilateral trade and investment issues.
This year marks the Council’s 19th annual meeting with all ten ASEAN Economic Ministers. Driven by the key ASEAN 2018 deliverable of fostering innovation and the digital economy, the Council presented its annual AEM White Paper on “Building a Strong and Integrated Digital Economy in ASEAN: Recommendations and Perspectives of U.S. Business”, which highlighted key challenges and recommendations in various sectors. These recommendations were presented at the Council’s annual AEM-U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) consultation, which was led by Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Jeffrey Gerrish.
