Indonesia Advances Central Bank Leadership Transition
Following Indonesia’s House of Representatives Commission XI’s decision to designate Destry Damayanti as Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) for a five-year term, the House plenary session officially confirmed her appointment on September 1. She is expected to be sworn in by President Prabowo Subianto shortly thereafter. Following former Governor Perry Warjiyo’s unexpected resignation in July, Destry, one of BI’s most senior deputies, has served as acting Governor and is set to become the central bank’s first female leader.
As acting Governor, Destry’s first monetary policy decision was to hold the benchmark rate steady at 5.75% on August 19, following cumulative rate increases of 100 basis points over the course of 2026. She said that the decision reflected expectations of further rupiah appreciation after significant selling pressure earlier in 2026. Following the announcement, Indonesia's government bonds attracted their largest foreign inflows since 2019, with overseas investors purchasing a net US$656.7 million in government debt on August 20.
Another factor that had bolstered private sector confidence in Destry’s upcoming leadership was her decision to maintain BI’s 2026 economic growth forecast at 4.9% to 5.7%, which fell short of President Prabowo’s more ambitious year-end target of 6%. However, on the day of being voted in by Parliament, she raised the upper bound of Indonesia’s growth projection for 2027 to 6% for the first time since 2012; this is more optimistic than the World Bank’s projection of 5.2% for this period.
