Launch of National Space Agency of Singapore Signaling New Commercial Space Opportunities
Singapore announced at an inaugural space summit that it will establish the National Space Agency of Singapore (NSAS) on April 1, 2026, under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The agency will spearhead Singapore's efforts to harness the growing global space economy, projected to reach US$1.8 trillion by 2035, and will assume and expand upon the current functions of the Office for Space Technology & Industry (OSTIn).
The NSAS is commercial and applications-focused, with LEO satellite communications expected to be a primary motivation for its establishment; instead of being oriented toward launch vehicles or human spaceflight. It will have a multi-agency operations centre that will support government agencies with satellite tasking, or requesting satellite imagery of a specific location, and geospatial data analytics, which could be applied to areas like port operations, urban planning, environmental monitoring and food security. Presently, the Singapore Government co-owns three earth observation satellites with home-grown ST Engineering, and Singapore already hosts 70 space companies, employing around 2,000 professionals across the value chain.
Through the NSAS, Singapore seems to be growing a strategic new industry, capitalizing on one of its comparative advantages of high-quality university education, to seize opportunities in the expanding space economy and develop national space capabilities. The joint hosting of the Space with Space Summit and Singapore Airshow in early February 2026 creates business opportunities across the aviation and space sectors, with cross-industry collaboration across connectivity, emerging technologies and commercial space applications.
