New Cloud Regions and AI-Ready Hyperscale Data Centers Become Active

Data center infrastructure continues to expand in Southeast Asia at a steady rate as several ASEAN Member States aim to become regional digital hubs and face increased demand due to AI adoption and cloud computing. In April and May 2025, the first AI-ready hyperscale data centers were launched in Indonesia by Equinix as well as Thailand and the Philippines by local companies. The announcements were then followed by the launch of cloud regions with AI-ready infrastructure in Indonesia and Malaysia by Microsoft.
The new data centers and cloud regions are designed to support larger workloads and high-performance, stable computing. The cloud regions in Indonesia and Malaysia alone are expected to generate US$4.3 million in new revenue and 147,000 jobs through 2028. Demand for AI computing power is expected to increase by ten times by 2030, leading data center demand to triple over the same time period.
