Alaska LNG Development Project Opportunity

Thailand's state-owned PTT Group has signed a 20-year, non-binding cooperation agreement with Glenfarne Alaska LNG to off-take 2 million tonnes per year of LNG, securing half of the project’s available third-party capacity from investment-grade customers. In March 2025, Glenfarne finalized definitive agreements with the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC) to acquire a 75% stake in the 8 Star Alaska joint venture and assume lead-developer responsibilities for the $44 billion Alaska LNG project. The project encompasses an 807‑mile, 42‑inch pipeline transporting North Slope gas through two construction phases, a 20 MTPA liquefaction terminal in Nikiski, and a North Slope carbon capture facility that will sequester 7 million tons of CO₂ yearly.
Interest in the project has been strong: more than 50 firms, from the U.S., Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, India, and the EU, have formally expressed interest totaling over $115 billion in potential contracts across equipment, services, investment, and off-take. Glenfarne is actively seeking engagement with pipeline contractors to complete front-end engineering and design for the pipeline, targeting a final investment decision on the domestic segment by late 2025.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with initial gas flows anticipated by 2028 and exports from Nikiski starting around 2030–2031. The project, which received federal approval during the Trump administration and maintains strategic energy-security backing, promises to deliver up to 3.3–3.5 Bcf/day to both domestic and international markets, bolster Alaska’s energy supply, and offer competitive LNG pricing into Asia by bypassing the Panama Canal and Horn of Africa.
