Brunei Commissions Largest Solar Initiative
The Government of Brunei has officially commissioned its largest solar initiative at Pulau Muara Besar (PMB), a milestone in the nation’s renewable energy transition. In collaboration with a Chinese enterprise, the Sustainable Integration of Natural and Renewable Energy (SINAR) project integrates solar power into the petrochemical refinery. Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy, Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, highlighted that the project forms part of a broader effort to enhance energy efficiency, sustainability, and economic resilience.
The first stage of SINAR project is expected to generate approximately 84,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean electricity annually, supplying 7% of the refinery’s power needs - a first for the Sultanate’s downstream sector. The next phase will expand nearly triple the refinery’s capacity from 8 million to 20 million metric tons per year by early 2029. However, as Brunei advances its green ambitions in close cooperation with Chinese companies, experts warn that many U.S. firms may find it increasingly risky to secure a foothold in integrated energy infrastructure and investment frameworks.
