Brunei Releases Voluntary AI Guidelines to Enhance Responsibility and Trust

On April 11, Brunei’s Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI) released the Guide on Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics for Brunei Darussalam (Brunei AI Guide) to promote ethical and responsible AI development and adoption. The Brunei AI Guide presents 7 guiding principles namely transparency & explainability, security & safety, fairness & equity, data protection & governance, robustness & reliability, human centricity, and accountability & integrity.
As it adopts a voluntary, risk-based approach that is technology and sector agnostic, the Guide makes notable references to the ASEAN Guide on AI Governance and Ethics (ASEAN AI Guide) – a regional guide that aligns with the U.S National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework and is comparative to the EU's Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI. This development signals a positive direction to harmonize with regional and international standards. Moreover, as a living document, the Guide may be periodically updated, and sector-specific guides may be developed in the future as AI adoption becomes more widespread.
