From September 27 to 30, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone visited Washington D.C., with the aim of enhancing economic relations and bilateral cooperation between Laos and the United States. A central focus of the visit was the ongoing talks to reduce the 40 percent reciprocal tariff currently imposed on American importers of goods made in Laos.

During his visit, Prime Minister Sonexay held a meeting with Ambassador Jamieson Greer, the United States Trade Representative (USTR), to advance discussions on trade and explore avenues for tariffs reduction on Lao goods. The Lao delegation emphasized the country’s readiness to further deepen trade and investment engagement with the United States. This includes bolstering domestic efforts to facilitate trade, streamlining customs procedures, and considering measures such as import tariff waivers and the reduction of non-tariff barriers. The Lao government also reiterated its commitment to promoting local production abroad and implementing policy reforms designed to attract foreign investment, while ensuring a transparent and business-friendly environment.

While no immediate or tangible outcomes were reached during this meeting, USTR described the discussion as productive and affirming, particularly on potential tariff concessions, which will be reported to the U.S. President for further consideration along with future economic engagement. This meeting was regarded as a strategic step in building mutual understanding and reaffirming the commitment to enhancing U.S. – Lao bilateral relations.

In addition, during the visit, the US-ASEAN Business Council had the honor of hostingPrime Minister Sonexay and his delegation to discuss how U.S. private sector can support the Government of Laos’ economic priorities and contribute to advancing U.S.-Lao economic relations. The engagement served as an opportunity to reflect on the longstanding partnership between the two countries and explore new opportunities for collaboration, as Laos and the United States mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, while 2026 will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Comprehensive Partnership.
