Brunei’s Continued Commitment Toward Digital Transformation

At the Innovation Tomorrow Forum, Haji Alimen Jaafar, Brunei Country Director of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area Business Council emphasized Brunei’s commitment to promoting ICT initiatives. In realization of Brunei Vision 2035, the ICT sector plays an important role in the country’s innovation, contributing 2.3 percent of the country’s GDP. In 2023, Brunei also launched 5G (5th Generation) mobile services, providing ultra-high-speed internet that meets the needs of increasing technological demand. The country is also aiming to increase the contribution of ICT to overall GDP to 3.2 percent by 2026. Additionally, Brunei is covered with 100 percent 4G and operational 5G networks, and the government also invested BND 2.5 million (1.9 billion USD) for emerging technologies research and development.
According to the ICT Development Index (IDI) report published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2024, Brunei scored 95.7 points, ranking second among ASEAN countries in the ICT index. The government’s commitment to research and development of ICT demonstrates its dedication to capacity building, providing increased opportunities for foreign investment in Brunei.
