Cambodia Approves $200 Million Wind Power Investment
The Royal Government of Cambodia has approved a $200 million investment for a 150 MW wind power plant in Mondulkiri Province, marking a major step in diversifying the country’s renewable energy mix. Endorsed by the Cambodian Investment Board under the Council for the Development of Cambodia, the project contributes to Cambodia’s target of sourcing 70% of electricity from clean energy by 2030. While hydropower and solar have dominated historically, wind energy is emerging as a strategic complement, particularly in Mondulkiri’s highland areas, which offer favorable wind conditions. Beyond diversification, wind development helps address seasonal hydropower variability and climate-related drought risks, strengthening grid stability and energy security. The project may also serve as a demonstration model to de-risk future investments within the broader 900 MW wind pipeline approved by the National Assembly. For U.S. companies, this matters as Cambodia’s wind expansion creates opportunities in turbine supply, grid integration, storage solutions, environmental assessment, and project finance, particularly for firms experienced in emerging-market renewable deployment.
