On February 12, Thai health officials outlined plans to strengthen healthcare and innovation cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during engagements at the World Health Expo 2026 in Dubai. The initiative reflects a policy shift from a relationship centered largely on medical tourism toward structured collaboration in life sciences, artificial intelligence (AI) in health space, and cross-border research and development. Under the new Royal Decree, Thailand’s Technology and Innovation in Life Sciences National Agency (TILSNA) has expanded its mandate to serve as a central coordinating body for international health partnerships. Prof. Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Chairman of the Agency, stated his goal is to position Thailand as a gateway for healthcare innovation across Southeast Asia and beyond.

Nipa Nirannoot, Consul-General of Thailand to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, stated that bilateral ties between Thailand and UAE have evolved significantly beyond tourism. She noted that both governments are now focused on showcasing Thailand’s capabilities in medical research, innovation, and high-value healthcare services. Regulatory alignment will be key to unlocking new opportunities, with further discussions expected between the two countries during Thailand’s International Healthcare Week in July, which will convene major regional health exhibitions and industry stakeholders.

Additionally, Thailand and the UAE are currently advancing negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with talks reported to be more than 80 percent complete. Thailand’s Commerce Minister Supajee Suthumpun stated that while the recent discussions touched on food security cooperation and Thailand’s halal hub ambitions, the agreement may span multiple industries, including health services and wellness tourism as an area of strategic relevance. The Minister reaffirmed intention from both sides to bring the negotiations to an early conclusion.
