Malaysia as an ASEAN Energy Trendsetter in 2025

Under Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has outlined an ambitious agenda to drive the region’s clean energy transformation. Speaking at the UN Asia-Pacific Business Forum, he emphasized Malaysia’s strategic role in leading the bloc toward a resilient, interconnected energy ecosystem that balances economic growth with climate responsibility. With initiatives like the expansion of the ASEAN Power Grid, promotion of green financing models, and the integration of smart technologies, Malaysia aims to position itself—and the region—as a hub for clean energy innovation and investment.
Fadillah also highlighted Malaysia’s potential to lead in solar, biomass, and hydropower development, alongside emerging frontiers like green hydrogen. The Asia Pacific Green Deal, he noted, offers a roadmap for collaborative decarbonization through regional energy trade, shared technology, and carbon market integration. By deepening public-private partnerships and engaging international partners such as Japan, Australia, and the U.S., Malaysia is galvanizing ASEAN’s collective strength to build a secure, low-carbon future.
